It was a Team Gloucester sweep at Fiesta this Thursday as Matt Curran and Jenn Brooks-Lassen claimed the top men's and women's spots. Curran outdistanced Gloucester high standouts to take top honors in 17:14, averaging a blazing 5:33 pace over the hilly course. Nik Gavelis was second in 17:38, edging out third place Ryan Cusumano by one second. Peter Asaro, another runner fresh off the mountain, placed fourth, breaking the sub-18:00 barrier with a 17:52 finish. Wes Lassen was the final sub-18:00 Team Gloucester finisher, coming in fifth at 17:54.

Brooks was the next Team Gloucester fiinisher and top woman, squeaking under 6:00 minute pace with a time of 18:34. Brooks pulled away from second-place Maureen O'Reilly over the final mile; O'Reilly finished second in 18:57. Michelle Horgan of Hamilton was the third woman, running 19:38.

Bob Gillis was the next Team Gloucester runner after Brooks, finishing 13th overall in 18:47. Rick Ciolino was right behind, finishing 19th (2nd in age group) in 18:59, Steve Davis was 23rd in 19:31, and Peter Vadala was 25th in 19:37. Layce Alves was victoriuous in the umpteenth rendition of Alves v. Geary, finishing 29th overall and 5th woman (3rd in age group) in a personal best 20:14. Kathy Burley was next, also running a personal best in 20:22, followed by Geary in 31st place running 20:27.

George Paganis was 43rd in 21:47, and Pixie Harrington was 124th in 27:16.

Kudos to Joe Iacono, who ran another blazing race, edging out Bob with an 18:44 finish, and to July White, who's shaping up for a nice cross country season with a 21:54 run.

A calculation from Peter:
Even for Matt, whose winning time this year (17:14) in the Fiesta 5k was only two seconds off his time last year, the future is gaining on him fast. Team Gloucester's youngest, Peter Asaro, 15, was 20th last year and ran a 6:24 pace. This year he ran a 5:45 pace to finish in 4th, 8.3 % faster in one year. If he does that again next year he'll run under 5:30 and win the race. May not happen next year. But item one is on his side.
