The 2004 Mt. Washington Road Race was run by Team Gloucester in memory of Jeff Rutchick.

The ritual that is Mt. Washington is closed for the year  Bob Gillis's Mt. Washington painter's cap has gone up the mountain a 22nd time.  Matt Curran's nearly ancient Asics flats, the only shoes he's ever worn up the mountain, have made run number 19, and Peter Watson has crafted yet another outstanding Men's Masters team.

Regardless of finishing time, getting up the mountain is a daunting mental and physical challenge. With that said, here are the Cape Ann Mountain Runners of 2004.

Open Results
Because this year's Mt. Washington race also functioned as the US National Mountain Championships, both the men's and women's fields were exceptionally strong.  Thirty-one year old Jonathan Wyatt of New Zealand won the men's race with a 56:41 in unfavorable conditions, destroing Daniel Kihara's old record of 58:20.  Paul Low of Amherst, MA was runner-up and national champion in 1:03:12.  Qualifier for the men's US mountain team were Low, Simon Gutierrez, Eric Blake, Mark Werner, and Andy Ames.

In the women's competition, Anna Pichrtova of the Czech Republic became the first woman to win four consecutive times, finishing in 1:12:19.  Erica Larson of Los Alamos, New Mexico, was runner-up and national champion in 1:14:17.  Automatic qualifiers for the women's US mountain team were Larson, Laura Haefeli, Cathy Pearce, Kelli Lusk, and Nikki Kimball.

Support Team
The weather was very wet, very cold, and very windy. As hard as it was running in those conditions, it must have ten times as miserable spectating in them, and special thanks goes to drivers and support team Wes Lassen, Donna Curran, Pixie Harrington, Mark Asaro, Pat and Peter Watson, Cindy Rutchick, and everyone else that spent hours freezing on top of the mountain just to show their support.
