New year's morning, Front Beach, Rockport, 10 a.m., 39-degree ocean
temperature, 37-degree air temperature, low tide: The annual New Year's Day
swim.
Matt Curran, one of the old hands at this, Mark Curran, his
11 1/2 year old son, and Dave "I was talked into it by Bob Gillis" Geary represented Team Gloucester among the
30 or so to take the plunge. Most ran in, dove and ran out.
Matt, as is his
tradition, lolled around in the water for awhile. No Gillis at the
countdown-- he's running over from Gloucester. As people are coming out of
the water, Bob shows up.
"I had a choice of staying on the roads and being on time or duck into the
woods part of the way and risk being late. What would I do?" Into the woods
and to the beach a few minutes late.
No matter, Bob stripped down for a
solo plunge. "I'll go back in with him," said Matt and the two of them
ran off to do their thing. Mark Curran, not that much his father's son this
day, passed on the second swim.
