It was an awesome showing for Team Gloucester at the Essex Turkey Trot this year. With many of us being beat up from the tough racing season, it was a good way to end things, with some great finishes for most of us.
Aj Migonis was the overall winner. First in for the Team Gloucester regulars was Matt-- who should have kept shirt on (that’s all I am going to say on that topic). Next to cross the line was Layce Alveswho ran her best race of the season and won the race overall on the womens side of the house. She stated she was on cloud nine later, mainly because she kicked the entire teams ass, including her usual pace man Dave. She also was able to hold off a valiant attempt by Rick Ciolino at the last moment.
She may walk away with bragging rights from this, but watch out Layce-- Dave has his own secret pacer ready for next season. Following close on her shoulder as Joe Iacano did to him at Beverly was Rick who ran a very conservative race as did John Kerry but he still could not beat Layce. Um I wonder---is Layce a republican?
Following Rick was Steve Whittey who has definitely come back strong after his layoff this summer; he looked awesome throughout the entire race. Great job Steve!. Waddle, Waddle, Waddle...that’s it folks following Steve was lard ass Gillis who had the fear of god put into him this year by Dave Geary. Geary kept pushing the pace the entire race, even though he over took Dave at mile four he said later he definitely was worried that he may not have been able to catch him.
Next in for the team was Dave who actually listened to what everyone has been telling him about going out slow and then picking up the pace; guess what it actually worked with him posting a PR for the course and a second place age group award. Right on his heels was Phil who said he thought he was going to reel Dave in; he just kept the pace going but was still happy with his finish. Last in for the team was Peter who is coming off of an injury as well, but just think Team Gloucester would not even exist if it was not for him getting a bunch of crazy people together each year to go run Mt Washington.
Well I guess I fall into that category because I did this year and I look forward to doing it as many years that I can. Overall it was a great race with Layce, Rick, Dave, Phil, and Matt all walking away with hardware (and a couple turkeys). But I don’t think it’s about who can get the hardware or who can get run the fastest it’s just about a group of friends getting together and having fun. I think this is definitely a great group and this isdefinitely what I call fun.
