Essex Turkey Trot , Sunday, November 20, 2005
There were no seconds on turkey at the Essex Turkey Trot 8k Nov. 20. No problem for Tristan Colangelo, overall winner, as usual, and Matt Curran, master's winner and 5th overall. *Both won 12-pound frozen turkeys as well as winning hardware. So did Charlie Kellogg of Manchester, running with us more Sundays these days and as usual running away with over-60 age category.
But for Team Gloucester's Layce Alves, second among the women, and Bob Gillis, second in his age category, there were no seconds on the turkey that Layce won last year and that Bob was 18 seconds away from winning this year. They settled for 2nd place hardware and team bragging rights.
For Tristan, winner of every local race he's entered this year and the top local runner in the Cape Race it was more of the same. Paced through the first mile by Patrick Rich of Beverly, he made a push to open up a gap on the three-mile hill only to be closed in on the next downhill before finishing on the downhill Causeway with 6 seconds to spare. (At the pace they're running that's not that close.)
For Matt, seconds did count-- at least one of them did. "I know I can break 30," he had said on the way to Essex. And he did: 29:59.
Bob in 15th and a minute and half faster than last year still had to watch the back of another 50 year old, Bob Stout of Beverly, who finished just ahead of him.
In 18th overall and 20 seconds faster than her winning time of last year among the women, Layce this year ran into Dianne Chivakos of South Hamilton and her 31:14 winning time.
*Note on "seconds:" Matt did win a second turkey in the raffle but gave it to Peter with whom he'd ridden to Essex in exchange for a ride home
