No "official" sounding write-up on this one, but I'll still tell you about it. Rick Ciolino's hypothesis that I am the cause of southbound traffic on 128 gained support as once again, we got stuck in it. We still made it to the race with time to spare, mainly thanks to JD's expert maneuvering.

It's been a long time since I ran on a team, however relaxed the attitude, and that made the night for me. Running for a team adds a level of intensity and fun to racing that I've really missed, and definitely made it worthwhile. JD, thanks for organizing this!

Brenda Philips started her cross country season a little early and lead off for Team Gloucester with a solid 21:00 split. I ran second running 15:23 (top split for women! neat). Wes Lassen took off like a bat out of hell and ran the third leg in about 16:17, and Tristan Colangelo brought it home in 12:54-- the fastest split of the day, by anyone. Not bad for a guy with Vegas on the brain.

The team combined for a total time of 65:34, good enough for ninth overall and second in the co-ed divisions. The North Shore striders were the top co-ed team with a time of 63:08. The "Ghosts of GBTC" were the overall winners in a time of 54:10, and Congratulations also to the first-place 2002 Team Gloucester, whose medals we picked up.

There were a lot of other Cape Ann people at the race and many of them ran very well. John Gillis ran with the champion North Shore Mixed 'A' team, running 14:36. Layce Alves put in a 19:53 with the North Shore Striders women's team, which placed third in the women's division. Everyone else from Cape Ann who was there, email me so I can add you.

The course had a nice mix of uphill and downhill with a great downhill finish, and was mostly on carriage roads with a small section of "real" trail. The only thing about the course that I wasn't crazy about was the loose gravel footing; aside from that I loved it and definitely want to run there again. And the watermelon afterwards was possibly the best tasting thing I've ever had. It was hard to get teams together this year due to a mix of injuries, illnesses, and vacations, but next year it would be nice to bring a couple teams-- all women, masters, mixed-- and really make a statement. I think we can.
